I have a Persian Lamb that needs a patch, however I would have cropped that coat and left the collar as is. My jacket will remain, as is, hanging in the closet and waiting for miracle repair.

Okay...Must confess... found myself in the same scary predicament, only sadly, no vodka to place blame.
Late night, bored, stumble upon QVC and it's like a train wreck, can't pull my eyes away for love or money. The overly chatty "hostess" is raving about this truly hideous 100% poly/acrylic skirt ( a combination that by all rights should be illegal) in this seriously nasty print and I am thinking - this can't be real. Who would ever consider buying this thing? Well, after listening to the sales voo-doo thing they do, I am now thinking hmmm, not so bad - actually kinda "cute" and finally as the clock ticks away I find myself frantically dialing in the hopes that I'll be one of the lucky few to score - and sadly I do. A few days later I am truly horrified when said skirt arrives - even nastier "up close and personal" Meh...What is truly embarassing however, is that I have come this close to pulling the trigger yet again. What is it with QVC and their jedi mind tricks?

Bleh, I hate those vintage wanna be brands, because the quality will never be the same as ACTUAL vintage clothing! I love shopping at the thrift store just because the quality of oldish things made in the U.S.A. is way superior to things that I find at F21 and H&M.

What a great find! I'm moving to Astoria in two weeks and will definitely check out "One of a Kind."

Also, thank you for pointing out the downside to damaged goods and thrift stores. It's not good for the employees who have to sort, nor the buyers, who have to be more vigilant or risk getting ripped off. It's very easy to donate damaged clothing here in NYC at GrowNYC's textile pickups. You can find dates/drop-off times here: http://www.grownyc.org/clothing

OPEN YOUR EYES while shopping there - I got a FAKE Hermes belt from there at loads of $. When I brought back the belt, they don't even know who consigned this belt, so the only thing they could say is "everything is final sale."

I used to work at a Goodwill. It was in Pennsylvania, so the rules may be different. Unless you are working your way through high school / college (like me) it’s a pretty shitty work environment. There are different types of employees – cashiers, clothing sorters, house ware sorters etc. They all make minimum wage. The clothing sorters have it the worst. They are expected to sort, tag/price, hang and place 125 pieces of clothing on the sales floor PER HOUR. That may not sound like a lot, but you have to remember that a decent percent of the donations are stained, ripped, smelly etc. Some entire bags of clothing were too disgusting to sell. These workers (mostly women) feel a tremendous amount of pressure to ‘make their numbers’ and are under the impression that if they do not, they will be fired. I have never worked somewhere with so many stressed out people, all for $7.25 an hour. So this possibly explains why so many stained items make it to the sales floor. Perhaps if the Goodwill bigwigs would stress quality over quantity, it wouldn’t be an issue.

I’d like to add that I loved the job. I was also a teenager and not trying to support a family. I miss the stuff (over 50% of my wardrobe and 65% of my home décor was collected during my 7 years there) but I certainly don’t miss the bullshit. Sorry for the super long comment!

Wow, I thought $12 for a shirt at my local Goodwill was a lot. There is a local thrift store in my area that opened a boutique and charges a lot for donated items as well. I agree that the mark up is outlandish for second hand merchandise.

so on the money re. WNTW-- the same would also apply to "how do i look?"-- the women always end up looking a good 10-15 years older post-makeover due to the hair and makeup alone, and the ghoulish 'experts' and 'friends' involved in the process enrage me with their crushing conformity and insulting behavior. there must be some huge amount of money or heavy brainwashing going toward getting these women to go on these shows. i do not understand it.
