This past weekend, I had the pleasure of receiving the following email:
Subject: Thank you.
I’ve been reading your blog for a while, but foolishly not quite following your philosophy. Today I did. I went to Value Village and saw things like like a Ella Moss shirt for $7, and a Joie skirt also for $7. Unfortunately they didn’t look great on. I did get two skirts and two shirts for about $33. Two of the items had tags still on them.

But my big score was at Buffalo Exchange, I got these Melissa Scarfun Summer Wedges for under $50 with tax. They look brand new, no evidence of wear.
Thanks again.
Anna
I’m relaying Anna’s Sharesie for a few reasons. To puff up my own ego (because that’s always fun
, and to illustrate the awesomeness of two terms rarely applied to Shopping – patience and persistence. In spite of her inexperience, Anna handled her Value City excursion like a total pro.
Back in my Newbie days, if I’d seen a Joie Skirt and an Ella Moss Top – JAPtastic brands that cost anywhere from $50-$350 PER ITEM – for SEVEN BUCKS EACH, I’d have been too wooed by the price differential to say no. Anna smartly tried these items on and, with the wisdom of a seasoned Cheap JAP, determined that even brands on the uber-cheap aren’t worth buying if they don’t make you look and feel fab. That she didn’t give up after her first attempt is even more impressive: She kept on truckin’, browsed her way to a super pair of almost-new wedges, and ultimately payed less than half of their $99 retail tag.
So. If ever you feel discouraged by shopping secondhand, remember Anna’s Sharesie. You might not find anything today. But a pair of killer shoes is right around the bend.
A big fat Mazel Tov to Anna. You’s a natural, dollface.

ive been reading ur blog for a months now…but! all the thrift shops, etc…in houston, suck! all they carry are castoff abercrombie and fitch, hollister, forever 21…=(
it seems that the quality of thrifting correlates to the fashionable-ness of the community….
