Yes, they go on sale and yes, Buffalo Exchange usually has some old Alternative inventory priced in the fifteen dollar range, but what if you’re super impatient and you want a current style for less circa NOW???
Let’s answer that question with another question: Did you know you can snag current Alternative Apparel styles at wholesale prices? Did you know it was possible to pay wholesale cost WITHOUT buying in bulk? Me neither… until I discovered a few wholesale t-shirt sites that (a) carry current Alternative Apparel styles and (b) don’t require you to purchase en masse. Bulk Wholesale Tees and gotapparel.com are my latest discoveries, and hot diggity DAMN, am I smitten!
Observe the below Retail vs. Wholesale comparisons. Retail pics on right, Wholesale pics on left. Visually identical, with one glaring difference – the left side pics cost a fraction of what you’d normally pay.

The Burnout Tunic – Retail: $38.00; Wholesale: $10.44

The Organic A-Line V-Neck – Retail: $32.00; Wholesale: $9.67

The Debbie Tee – Retail: $32.00; Wholesale: $10.32
Sidebar: Isn’t it refreshing to see women modeling t-shirts without looking like they’re competing in a wet t-shirt contest?
Yes. Yes it is.

Alright, you are my hero for this. Whenever I go to Dillards, I always walk by the Alternative Apparel section, pet the t-shirts, and sigh because they’re so expensive. $10 is totally affordable though!
Dude, there’s a v-neck on the BWT site for $5.50. That’s forever 21 league right there.
Hm. Please let us know what shipping is like if you order — it says there is a $4 handling charge added to every order.
THIS JUST CHANGED MY LIFE. Hells yes!
There are also eBay sellers that buy American Apparel in bulk. I had been scouring stores for a nude slip to wear under see-through dresses for months. Finally I discovered American Apparel has a Fine Jersey T dress that would do just the trick, however it cost $25. $25 for a long t-shirt was not my idea of a good buy. After scouring the internet for options I found the eBay store Harrington Outlets http://stores.ebay.com/harringtonoutlets. They don’t have everything American Apparel makes, but I did buy my brand new American Apparel dress for $12.
What an incredibly useful post! Thank you for backing up the boycott like this. I’m in.
I love Alternative Apparel’s knits but do agree about the price point! Ouch. I try to support them because they’re based in GA (where I’m from!), but at those prices, now I can definitely snag some more!
Also, Peach Frod in Willimasburg (n. 10th b/w bedford and Berry I think..) has alternative apparel for $3.75 sometimes
peach FROG!
Yes, thanks for this info. I wish Alternative Apparel sold more dress like things, but this works well too!
Thank you for the links! It’s always great to have go-to basics…especially ones that aren’t american apparel. yay!
I love these shirts and I couldn’t agree more about the wet t shirt comment!
Actually, they always have these at Loehmanns for like about half price if you’re into instant gratification like I am! I hate online shopping because I hate to wait. So just in case anyone is like me, they have them at the NYC uptown location in the back on the first floor! Holla!
