The moment McQueen for Tar-jay hit the racks was the moment I stopped giving a shit about designer collabs. I’m not overly familiar with McQueen RTW, but I assume it’s a bit more attractive than his cost-friendly effort (and I use that term loosely). Is copying your own designs really that difficult? Oy.
I can, on occasion, be too proud to retract an opinion. Oh who are we kidding, I’m a stubborn little beotch, and I went into Target today amped up to give another piss-poor designer collabs effort the verbal bitchslap it surely deserved. Then I tried on a bunch of stuff from Anna Sui’s Gossip Girl-inspired line, and realized I couldn’t knock it.
Like any collection, it has its ups and downs. But on the whole, the majority of it exceeded the only standard I use for determining whether or not something’s worth buying: I have an honest chat with myself and ask, “If this weren’t sanctioned by the hands of X designer, would I love it and wear it anyway?”
Granted, I like nothing more than a solid rant. So let’s start with the bad news first. The Tops portion of Sui’s line ranges from the mediocre to the utterly appalling. Case(s)-in-point: These two outfits.

I’m not sure what’s going on with the vest/cropped pants combo. Having seen the vest up close, I assure you it’s as stupid in person as it is in the pic. The real horror story though, is the black Tulle Tie Top, which I was brave enough to try on. It’s like a netted, short-sleeved cardigan forgot its purpose as a cover-up. The gaping holes created by the ties make it more of a slutter-up. BAH!
Then, there’s the Text Tee – a gimmicky disaster of a long-sleeved shirt bearing the letters BFFLWHLAGSAL.

Best Friend For Life Who Have Lunch And Go Shopping A Lot. I’m sure Gossip Girl’s producers insisted on the inclusion of texts in Sui’s line, and that’s fine – I can excuse shameless promos. I can’t, however, get past shitty grammar.
A Best Friend Has Lunch; Best Friends Have Lunch. This is basic subject-verb agreement here, people. COME ON.
Okay, okay, nitpicking accomplished. Overall, the line doesn’t entirely suck. Stay tuned for the good news.

Did a review on this line on my blog as well. Some pieces were horrible, but the ones that were amazing were seriously amazing. I’m in love with the leather jacket that I got and some other pieces I picked up. I admit, a bit pricey but pretty good quality. Plus I got 10% off
I’m not sure why you feel the need to be so pointlessly negative about designer collaborations. This is the kind of thing you should be championing, not constantly criticizing. You like the collection- so why not post about the items you liked, instead of whining about all two things you didn’t like?
It seems as though you reject rather quickly all cheap things that didn’t either come from a thrift store or from american apparel. Honestly, reading your blog gets difficult at times- it seems as though the only shopping that’s justified at all in your mind is thrift shopping.
finally! i’ve been waiting for someone to discuss the line since we don’t get it here in canada (slightly devied by that). i checked it out online and the reviews were great for the most part. i was kind of shocked at the prices, only because i expected them to be lower. however the price points aren’t totally unlike other collabs they’ve had.
can’t wait to hear about the good side of the line. even though i won’t be owning any of it. boo.
Anna, did you read the post? She was admitting to liking the line, despite her previous experience with terrible designer collabs. The last line is “stay tuned for the good news”, which led me to believe a bigger, picture-filled post is to follow shortly.
And yes, thrift shopping is a main focus here. See the 3 million previous blog posts about her LOVE of thrifting/ finding great clothes for great prices. If you don’t like that premise, than perhaps this isn’t the blog for you.
Honestly, I have to agree with Anna. I know you like the line just when you pick on something, you tear it apart. This isn’t nitpicking; this is effing ripping it a new one!
Look, I love your blog,it just really is hard to read sometimes. Focusing less on negative things and not complaining as much would make it a million times better!
“Best Friend For Life Who Have Lunch And Go Shopping A Lot. ”
Sounds like a main stream tribute to all things Engrish to me
to Anna & E- i’m pretty sure millions of people have blogs to express their opinions, not those of others. if you don’t like it, don’t read it….or start your own blog. xxx
