Before I reveal the specifics of my epic jumpsuit find, I’d like to revisit one of thrift’s greatest truths:

The last thing you find is usually the best.

Here’s how this usually plays out: You’ve been thrifting for however long it takes to fully exhaust your shopping stamina. You’re hungry; you’re grouchy; you’re running on fumes; you’re ready to get the hell outta dodge. You’ve got two choices at this point: Call it a day, or hang tough for ten more minutes.

What happens in those last ten minutes? You find things like this:

This vintage khaki jumpsuit is, hands down, one of my favorite scores in the history of my secondhand shopping career.

It fits perfectly; its neutral tone tempers its ridiculousness; it looks sick tucked into boots; it’s a kickass outfit in one fell swoop. I found it at Green Village Junk Shop after an hour and a half of hunting.

Tacking ten minutes of overtime onto ninety minutes of strenuous sifting isn’t a sane decision by any stretch of the imagination, but crazy clearly pays off.

So. Effing. Worth It. Eek!

Shopping sustainably enables one to rationalize what some view as politically incorrect purchases. I’m talking, of course, about FUR. Being attacked by a PETA freak for donning a secondhand rabbit fur/tweed toggle coat def pissed me off, but it didn’t do jack to change my adoration of criminally warm outerwear. I’m heartless like that.

The rabbit fur jacket above hails from Green Village Junk Shop – a mammoth treasure trove located in a slightly dodgy area of Bushwick (more on the awesomeness of Green Village later). I was at tail end of a strenuous digging session, but not yet exhausted enough to miss the gleaming white fluff piled on top of belts, ties and hats. (What do I always say? With thrift, the last thing you find is often the coup of the day!).

The mint condition fur had one big fat glitch: A tear in the back that made it unwearable in its current form.

I had an idea of how it could be fixed, but I wasn’t about to spend more than $20 on damaged goods, fur or no. $15 was pushing it. $10 I could do. And so, I plotted.
Green Village is run by some old school Orthodox Jews – they take credit cards, but prefer to deal in cash to avoid the heinous fees. Understandable. I weighed my bag of finds (clothes in the back bins are sold for $1.50 a pound, provided you buy at least 10 lbs – LOVES IT), whipped out my cash to pay, and took the owner’s visible delight as a sign to go in for the kill.

CJ: How much for the fur?

GV: This one? Picks up fur, assesses damage. You can have it for $10.

CJ: Poorly attempts to hide glee/joy. $10 works. I’ll take it.

So, how did I remedy the damage wreaked on this otherwise stunning, $10.00 Saks Fifth Avenue fur?

I’m splitting up posts in an attempt to up my frequency game. Answer to follow. GET EXCITED.

Platforms are a double-edged sword. Sometimes a platform alleviates the feeling of walking on one’s tiptoes; sometimes it adds insult to injury. Whether or not a platform hurts or helps largely depends on the girth of the heel to which it’s attached. See exhibit A:

At right, we have Pour La Victoire‘s Irina Suede Pumps on Hidden Platform, i.e. the embodiment of sex on a stick. The problem – $250 price tag aside – is that the width of the heel is more stiletto than pump. The narrow heel offsets the platform’s attempt at stability because the weight isn’t distributed evenly across the shoe. Walking in the Pour La Victoires is a hellish experience as a result.

At left, we have
Jeffrey Campbell‘s Jezabel Suede Platform Pump – a little less sexy, a lot more practical, and still a pretty hot shoe overall. The key to the platform’s walkability is the cone heel. The wide part of the cone takes some of the weight off the balls of the feet and redistributes it, making for a less painful walking experience overall. Perhaps this is why the JC’s less intimidating to the eye. I don’t know about you, but the Pour La Victoire – sexy as it is – absolutely scares the shit out of me.

I highly recommend hitting a consignment store before committing to one of this fall’s latest styles. Everything recycles itself, and shoe trends are no exception. See exhibit B:

I’m not usually into designer shoe collaborations, but Easy Spirit knows comfort, and Tara Subkoff knows design. This collab was a beauteous marriage, one I’m sorry I missed when it came out back in 2006.

Wait, I’m lying. I just checked the price points on Tara Subkoff for Easy Spirit shoes: $200 – $500 per pair. For a line that usually sells for $50 – $150, that is all kinds of nucking futs.

Tokio 7 charged an uber reasonable $40 for these Tara Subkoff for Easy Spirit pumps. Let’s see how they stack up in comparison with the new shoes pictured above.

Hidden Platform: Check.
Cone Heel: Check.
Fall-Appropriate Suede: Check.
Mint Condition: Check.
Under $50: Check.

Walkability: Check, to a point. I’ve worn these shoes on three separate occasions already. While they’re surprisingly comfortable overall, they’re still pretty high. One solid hour of walking and/or standing in them is about all I can tolerate; after that point, they start hurting like a bitch. Three hours of wear with seated breaks is do-able. Whatever. They’re effing awesome, and having a pair of truly hot shoes that don’t make me fall on my ass is much more satisfying than I anticipated.

Should you find yourself in the market for a suede platform pump in the spirit of the above, be realistic about what you can and can’t walk in. Health care isn’t free yet, and broken ankles aren’t cheap to fix.

Is the Hell’s Kitchen Salvation Army a bitch and a half to thrift? Yes.

Can a thorough browse at the Hell’s Kitchen Salvation Army result in a pair of legit Rich & Skinny Jeans? Also yes.

These denim dreams were originally priced at $14.99; I happened to find them on a half-off-all-green-tags day, hence their ludicrously low price of $7.99.

So. What do you do when you snag $220 jeans for $7.99?

Tee hee.

Sidebar: I accidentally chucked the hard evidence. My bad. BUT – I have an alibi!

Those audacious enough to doubt my thrifting skillz are advised to swing by the amazing AuH20 and ask the even-more-amazing Kate Goldwater for confirmation re: all the above.

A new with tags Theory Cashmere Sweater retails for hundreds of dollars, and costs under fifty at Buffalo Exchange. Cashmere lovers, rejoice.
...keep reading NWT Theory at Buff Ex

Theory cashmere sweaters have been on my If I Could I Would list for quite some time. Meaning if we entered dreamland and $250.00 suddenly wasn’t an absurd price to pay for un sweater de cashmere (no I don’t speak a second language), I’d go for it.

A Theory cashmere sweater equates to winter awesomeness. It’s warm. It’s stylish. It’s what Nina Garcia might call “classic” on a shooting break from hawking shit for Target.

On the rare occasion I find a sweater of the Theory cashmere ilk at a thrift or resale shop, it’s either damaged, or it’s seen better days (this is understandable as it’s one of the few things women buy and actually wear). Hence the reason I’m particularly psyched to report the first epic score of 2010.

The below – from Buffalo Exchange – isn’t just a Theory cashmere sweater in mint condition.

It’s NEW. As in, still has its ORIGINAL TAGS.

It was way large for me, but I was so beside myself with glee that it mattered not. A $255.00 TAGS-ON NEW Theory cashmere sweater for $45.00?! This is the stuff of dreams, and it’s REAL! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!

I gifted it to Mom for her birthday last month, because I’m generous like that. I’m pretty sure she hasn’t taken it off since.
The thing was kickass. STELLAR. Two years of continuous wear resulted in an unraveling exterior and a torn interior, but I wasn’t yet ready to give it up: I snipped out the lining altogether and attacked the pilled tweed with a Sweater Stone. The jacket lived on for another year but at this point, it’s on its last legs.

I donned the tweed zip-up last week en route to Mt. Sinai for three reasons:

1. I was suffering from leper-face (i.e. facial ulcers, a symptom of my Crohn’s disease, MEH) and wearing it makes me feel better.

2. I feared its expiration date was nearing and felt it deserved a final outing.

3. I had no effing idea how cold it was that day.

As previously mentioned, the jacket had no lining, i.e. it was about as warm as a synthetic long-sleeve tee, and I was wearing it in 30 degrees-plus-windchill conditions. Awesome. NOT. I was freezing my ass off, my face was scaring small children, the jacket was so not doing its job. After my doctor’s appointment, I took a chilly stroll in spite of it all. Why?

I was blocks away from Upper East Side Thrift Mecca and I needed to reverse the shittiness of the day obvs. (I went to school on a lake outside Chicago; I know how to say Eff Off to cold weather.)

I eventually made it to Arthritis Thrift Shop, where I was initially disgusted by the abundance of worn-out clothes at Upper East Side price points.

Note: Unfamiliar thrifts require 7-10 minutes of reconnaissance to ensure cost/quality control. That means look at the condition of the garment, look at its price, move to next garment, repeat. A $20.00 tag on a heinous, stained GAP sweater is cause for alert; if the pattern repeats itself, it’s cause for leaving the store. A thrift that overcharges is not a thrift that gets your biznass. Doneskies.

I was initially too disheartened by the results of Arthritis Thrift Shop’s cost/quality analysis to give the store an in-depth browse. The day was getting suckier, and I wasn’t about to end it getting myself ripped off. Just then, a 50% Off sign caught my eye. I figured only select items were on sale, what with this being the Upper East and all. I checked with the manager, who giddily informed me that said 50% Off sign applied to the ENTIRE STORE.

Me likey.

Buoyed by this knowledge, I tore through the racks and found some Ralph Lauren and Theory sweaters on sale for under $20. Nice. En route to the dressing room, I checked the coat rack for kicks.

And there it was: A Twill Twenty Two tweed zip-up jacket trimmed in fur, just like the one I had on. Except the barely-worn version had more than its lining in tact; I know rabbit when I feel it, and the trim on this puppy was the real deal.

To quote the dudes from The League when they can’t contain their enthusiasm: SHIVAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

The jacket fit perfectly and it was so warm, I got a little schvitzy trying it on. The real fur trim and toggle detail means its retail value’s on par with Twill Twenty Two’s St. Moritz Wool Jacket.

In a nutshell? $429.00.

Arthritis Thrift initially tagged my mint tweed at $70.00 – a reasonable number based on its brand and condition. What made the score criminally awesome was, of course, the fact that it was 50% Off. Legal theft at its finest.

I took some dressing room shots of my old tweed zip-up, hugged it goodbye, donated it on the spot, and marveled at my good fortune as I strolled the streets, snuggly in its bunny-tastic replacement.

Maybe the sartorial deities smiled on me that day. Maybe that’s just the power of thrift. You can start the day feeling like crap, and freezing your ass off in a jacket loved to the point of losing its lining. You can end it feeling like a shopping goddess, buoyed by unearthing the toasty answer to your coat conundrum – an answer that cost you less than forty bucks.

Viva la gently-worn world.

Okay, okay, so I was going to try to be all environmentally conscious and attempt to buy vegan ankle boots. But when you find Salvatore Ferragamo footwear at Beacon’s Closet that’s both aesthetically superior and more cost-friendly than any of its non-leather counterparts you don’t say no.

That shopping secondhand is always more eco-friendly than buying new REGARDLESS of whether or not the new item in question is manufactured responsibly should go without saying. But I digress.

Ferragamo shoes are pricey for a reason – they’re expertly crafted, and built to last fo EVA. Hence the reason they can be shopped re-sale. The boot portion of these were in stellar condition. The leather laces were another story – they were so gnarled that lacing up the boot proved nearly impossible. The situation was easily remedied with a trip to my local shoe repair shop: New leather laces cost me all of nine bucks. Doneskies.

What do I heart most about these boots? Firstly, they’re an ideal counterpart to patterned tights. Hello badass.

Nextly, they’re thin enough that they can be worn under straight leg jeans.

This does wonders for elongating shrimpy legs, FYI.

Loves it!
I used to think thrift = gross… but after taking a good look around I’ve found some amazing things! So thanks for opening my eyes, and ridding me of lots of craptastic overpriced stuff that will just sit in my closet anyways…

Attached is a pic of my latest find!!!

I was sooo excited when I found this D&G studded jacket… only probs is that it’s light blue… but I’m thinking I’ll dye it black cos light blue feels a little too retro 90s for me.

Cheers

Dollface – that looks fahhhhbulous on you! The jacket’s a bonafide steal – it probs would have retailed for at least a few hundred bucks, so well done you! Totally heart the idea of dying it black – whatever makes you wear it more is worth doing, methinks. Mazel Tov on your purchase, and if I ever find myself up north, I’ll certainly make it my biznass to check out Talize.:)

When I purchased my Etienne Aigner flat black boots a few months ago, I assumed they’d hold up well into the fall. Not so. That the soles of my most comfortable walking shoes are worn to the point of flip-flopping against the pavement has nothing to do with quality: It has to do with the fact that I’ve done a shitload of walking in them five days a week for the past two months. Seeing as I got them for $22.99 at Burlington Coat Factory, I don’t feel all that guilty about buying a new pair.

I hit Buffalo Exchange yesterday intending on purchasing a gently-worn replacement on the cheap. I tried on a pair of chocolate brown Cole Haans (flat, obvs – I don’t do cabs), priced at a very reasonable $45. Then I saw these:

The leather was so buttery, so soft, that I kind of wanted to rub it all over my face. I settled on petting it for a bit, checked the size, and tried one of the boots on. The quality was so stellar that the thing molded to my foot almost instantly. These puppies weren’t just made for walking – they were flat, OVER-THE-KNEE boots made for walking.

They were also the most expensive thing in the store. Granted, in the world of over-the-knee boots, $145 isn’t all that bad. But it’s not a number you see too often at a Buffalo Exchange either. I was unfamiliar with the brand of my find, so I asked an uber faahhbulous staffer after its retail price.

Me: These are effing amazing.
Buff Ex Staffer: They ARE amazing.
Me: I’m not questioning the pricetag – I know you guys are usually right on with that stuff. I’ve just never heard of Tashkent by Cheyenne.
Buff Ex Staffer: Yeah, I don’t think it’s that well-known, but I’m pretty sure these retailed for around $400.

I decided to put the boots on hold after I almost had a heart attack watching another girl try them on. Would buying them on the spot have been a no-brainer? Heck yeah. But, seeing as they cost more than I’d planned on spending, I figured waiting a day couldn’t hurt. I also wanted to know exactly how high-end Tashkent by Cheyenne was before I fully committed. Five minutes of Googling yielded the following results:

Who What Wear drooled over the line last August, calling it “unfussy, unostentatious, and thoroughly unique.” Tashkent by Cheyenne’s also been featured in every magazine from ELLE to WWD to Time Out New York. Why the eff hadn’t I heard of it?

When the gal at Buff Ex said my boots retailed for “around $400,” she was only partially accurate. Yes, a few Tashkent by Cheyenne flat sandals start at that amount. But the numbers attached to the boots are even more ludicrous: We’re talkin’ $600 a pair, people. No wonder the brand wasn’t on my radar.

I don’t just heart resale because it’s cheap: I heart resale because it gives me access to things I could otherwise never EVER afford. Even if I could – $600 for SHOES?! That’s nucking futs. Paying $145 for a pair of $600 shoes, however, is another story… one with a much happier ending.

I’m buying these today with ZERO reservations.

Viva la Buy-Sell-Trade.
I’m pretty sucky at math, so I used a handy dandy online conversion percent calculator to determine the following.

The dollar amount of what I paid for my barely- worn, J Brand Love Story Flares at Buffalo Exchange equates to:

I live in Columbus, Ohio and find myself perpetually jealous of the plethora of high quality thrift shops New York has, and was therefore completely ecstatic to find this brand at a store I hardly expected to have anything of this quality.

Just thought I’d share my success as you’ve inspired me to search the depths of Ohio in pursuit of similar scores to what you consistently discover.

Love your site!

Bari

Bari dollface: This is one of the most pimpin’ blazers I’ve ever seen. The color, the buttons, like WHOA! Your score proves that shopping cheap really is (Incoming: Massive Cliche) like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re gonna find. Since you were kind enough to include close-ups of the tags, let’s pause to appreciate the astronomical disparity between what this gem of a jacket initially cost and what you ultimately paid.

Bari’s Tahari Blazer at full retail price = $398.00. (I know, I’m nauseated by that number too).
Bari’s Tahari Blazer at TJ Maxx’s first attempt at price reduction = $200.00. (Meh. I’m still queasy).
Bari’s Tahari Blazer on TJ Maxx’s clearance rack = $29.00. (Now THAT’s more like it!)

Cheers to Bari for her totally bonkers score – I’m obvs kvelling vicariously, and you should be too. Hurrah!

Dear Cheap JAP,

I found this Ralph Lauren *Black Label* (ahh) orange linen crop jacket at a Marshalls in the middle of nowhere for… $15 on clearance. It had to be a mistake because the retail price on the RL tags were $1,095 and it was in perfect condition. That means I basically got this jacket for 99% off. I don’t really know how I’ll wear it yet because it’s a bright red orange, but I just couldn’t pass it up!

Lurking nearby was another Black Label masterpiece, a black velvet strapless cocktail dress with a bubble skirt. Unfortunately it was still priced at $200 but I’ll be checking up on it frequently. Eek wish me luck.
-S

Black Label at Marshalls for $15? ARE YOU SHITTING ME?! This stunner of a jacket’s more than a bonafide score – it’s an effing INSPIRING find! Don’t stress about the color; just go neutral on bottom (this would be KILLER with white jeans, methinks). I’m bright green with envy. Also very, very proud. Well done you!

Oooh, and do keep us posted on that cocktail dress.

The city’s been flush with sales as of late, as Recession + Common Sense = DOOM for any high-end brand that’s ever marked up its merch 300% (read: all of ‘em). Karma’s a bitch, ain’t it? Anyhoo, women are bonkers this week over one sale in particular. I’m talking sneaking into the ‘friends and family’ preview sale, waiting in line for a half an hour just to get in the door, stripping by the racks to try things on, clawing each other over coveted pieces in a PMS-like fury, et. al. It’s the kind of sale that makes women LOSE THEIR SHIT. It’s the Semi-Annual Diane von Furstenberg Sale, and here’s why I’m not going.

The Average Retail Price of a DVF Dress is $395. Barf. Dresses at the semi-annual sale go for $150, max, which isn’t entirely absurd in the grand scheme of things. Unless you’re the maharajah of thrift a-la-ME, in which case, you know you can do better.

Once upon a time, secondhand DVF was limited to high-end consignment; a barely-worn piece could be had for around $100. Still a deal, fo sho, but I can’t buy $100 dresses on a regular basis. When the recession hit, something magical happened: DVF started showing up in thrift stores. The first documented sighting of the phenomenon occurred six months ago at Buffalo Exchange in the form of a navy blue shirtdress that proved ill-fitting. I did not lose hope. I knew if I stayed the course, I’d eventually find another. A few weeks ago at Beacon’s Closet, the stars finally aligned and BAM! There she was.

As you can see, this effing gorgeous satin and chiffon number is almost entirely transparent. What I layered underneath to keep it from looking like lingerie requires another post altogether, as it too was an epic score. For now, let’s focus up on what really matters: The price differential between DVF retail, DVF semi-annual sale, and DVF secondhand. (And for the record, my secondhand DVF was in remarkably good condition – no loose threads, stains, tears, nada. If chiffon had a superlative, it would be Most Likely to Get Caught in Side Zipper, so this is particularly impressive. Point being, I don’t want to hear any crap about how I sacrificed quality for cost or whatever. Moving on.)

New DVF Dress at Full Retail Price: $395.00
New DVF Dress at Semi-Annual Sale: $150.00
Gently-Worn DVF Dress at Beacon’s Closet: $22.95

Oh right, you probably want proof. Okay.

Paying $127 LESS than everyone at the semi-annual sale and snagging a dress of the same brand, sanity in tact? Fucking priceless.

Word to the thrift.

Two days ago, I embarked on the arduous task of renewing my driver’s license (three months past its expiration date – oops). As my local DMV is located in one of Jersey’s many malls, I did some poking around after I’d fulfilled my objective, hit Burlington Coat Factory, and found these Etienne Aigner knee-high black boots in the clearance section.

At an average cost of $70, Etienne Aigner isn’t offensively priced to begin with, but snagging a pair for $22.99 is still pretty effing awesome. (I also snagged a scarf for $7.99, hence the final total.)

I wear boots all year round, rain or shine, so much so that every pair I’ve poached from Mom is now more busted up than broken in. Wearing these new leather boots without spraying them with some sort of weather-proofing element on a day that called for scattered thunderstorms might be considered a dumbass move. Stupider still, I left my apt in this outfit, sans umbrella.

By the time I exited the subway on the Upper West, the sky was doing some serious wizzing. I was all kinds of effed.

My inner monologue at the time went something like this:

Four blocks from my destination, already running late, and cannot, will not, buy ANOTHER five dollar shitty umbrella. I need to haul some serious ass. I HATE exercise. FUCK.

So I bit the bullet and broke into a full sprint, anticipating blisters resulting from the inaugural wearing of new shoes and water damage resulting from my failure to weatherproof their leather. By the time I got to my appointment, I looked like Finkle/Einhorn after her fight with Ace down at the docks, which is to say, a runny-mascaraed version of Hell. I was a lost cause, but what of my boots?!

Shockingly enough, my feet were still mostly dry. There wasn’t even a hint of a cut or blister – it was like I’d run those four blocks in cross trainers. Not that I’d know. The best part? The pissing sky had zero effect on my boots; post-storm, they looked as new as they were.

I figured a shot of me looking like a drowned rat was the least I could do in their honor.
A satin DKNY tuxedo blazer causes friend to reconsider shopping second hand apparel.
...keep reading DKNY Satin Blazer Prompts Newbie Cheap JAP Breakthrough Moment

I NEED to go shopping but I’m SOOOO broke. Help. This, from my girl Krip, via gChat. While I’d had previous success converting my childhood bestie to Forever 21, the look of disgust on her face upon entering Beacon’s Closet that day outed her as Queen O’ the Thrift Skeptics, if there were such a position.

I’ve known Krip long enough to know that for her, ‘broke’ means she doesn’t want to spend more than $100. Even so, I understand why she equates $100 to nada – in her world of Meatpacking boutiques, that figure might buy her half a shoe. In my world of the gently-worn, $100 bucks is enough for at least four things, sometimes more. But even that promise couldn’t counter the same look of disgust that crossed Krip’s face this past Sunday, mere moments after entering Housing Works’ Chelsea store. Oy. This shit was going to require my full attention and some strategic negotiating.

Me: Nice face.
Krip: Whatevs, I haven’t walked out yet.
Me: If you try on everything I pull for you here, you don’t have to go to another thrift store today. Or ever again. Deal?
Krip: Dealskies.

A knee-length black BCBG skirt with silver snap details took Krip from disgusted to only slightly skeptical; said skepticism was subsequently quashed by a Paul Stuart tuxedo shirt in mint condition. And right before we entered the dressing room, a lavender tunic/vest thingy prompted legit interest – the brand was unrecognizable, but the material was unmistakable. 100% cashmere. We JAPs have a sixth sense for these things.

All three items fit fabulously, and were bought with money to spare. Krip’s visible excitement over the cashmere tunic’s $13 pricetag meant she’d realized the look-loaded potential of secondhand clothes, but I knew she wasn’t yet fully converted. She was, however, encouraged enough to hit HWorks’ Gramercy location for another round.

Once there, I reassessed my strategy. I knew Krip had been looking for a new blazer; finding her one might seal the deal. Just then, I came across a DKNY black satin stunner of a jacket. Dressy enough to wear as a suit separate, versatile enough to up the chic-factor on a pair of jeans – the piece was just so Right. It fit Krip perfectly, and while its quality merited the collective victory dance we gave it, its $55 pricetag was more than I’d anticipated. Krip has willingly paid at least three times that for blazers in the past; to her, this was a bigtime score. But I knew it was too pricey to prompt the Breakthrough Moment I’d been aiming for. AND THEN…

Hang on. The story’s conclusion requires a word on the Breakthrough Moment in general and as it applies here. Bella Swan’s happened when she asked her vampire boyfriend to bite her neck; Carrie Bradshaw’s happened after she slept with one of her therapist’s patients (played by Bon Jovi, mrrow). And mine happened upon finding a killer Tahari blazer at Goodwill for eleven buckaroos. For some, a breakthrough moment is the point at which you realize you’d rather live in love than die without it. For others, it’s the last straw that proves you pick the wrong men.

For Cheap JAPs, it’s the material proof of your ability to shop cheap and still look loaded. The Breakthrough Moment implies an involuntary kind of commitment; experiencing it is synonymous with embarking on a new course, and never looking back. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Anyway, back to Krip. We get to the register and she takes out her debit card, more than okay with forking over $55 for the killer satin DKNY blazer. When the staffer rings it up, the number $13.75 appears on the screen.

Krip: Wait, I’m confused. Is it $13.75 off of $55 for some reason?
HWorks Staffer: No. That’s your total.
Krip: Wait. WHAT?!
HWorks Staffer: It’s on sale for $13.75. All outerwear is 75% Off.

At this point, I danced a little jig and did the dirt-off-your-shoulder move. Krip picked her jaw up off the floor and started yelling to no one in particular.

Did you SEE that?! That was INSANE! I’ve spent more on bullshit from H&M! What was I THINKING shopping at Saks?! I’ve never paid so little for something so awesome in my life!

And there it is, ladies. The Breakthrough Moment that transforms a princess into a Cheap JAP in one fell swoop.

Totally amped from the day, us Cheap JAPs had enough adrenaline left over for one last stop. We ended up at City Opera Thrift Shop across the street, but it wasn’t my idea. It was Krip’s.

Second hand is the real deal.
...keep reading Designer Discount Dress Alert

Yesterday afternoon, I walked twenty blocks up 5th Avenue in search of Monk; a thrift store deemed better than Beacon’s by some fellow Park Slopers. It’s not. But if you’ve got time to sift through the junk, it certainly has potential.

Now, before I boast about yet another brand-name find at yet another thrift store, I’d like to address some readers who feel I should temper my secondhand finds with more sample sale and/or designer discount fare.

While most JAPtastic brands are heinously overpriced, even I admit that cost often relates to quality. Well-made clothing doesn’t just hold up until its original owner tires of it; it lasts long enough to be re-worn and re-born into the wardrobe of another. I don’t shop at Goodwill, Salvation Army, Beacon’s, et. al because I aim to look like a fifties housewife or a free-lovin flower child. I shop these stores because they offer the greatest deals in fashion, provided you have the time and energy to notice.

I’m well aware that not everyone has hours to spend searching for said deals, which is why I fully support Loehmanns, Filene’s, TJ Maxx, and other established brands-for-less outlets. For the sake of argument, let’s say I have a $150 dress reduced to $60 from Loehmanns and a $150 dress reduced to $6 from Monk – the main difference between the two being that one has its tags on it and one’s a little wrinkly. It is ludicrous for my lifestyle and my budget to shell out $60 when I could spend $6. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ludicrous for you. Particularly if you work in an office and need something semi-professional, not something in magenta chiffon.

Long story long, my enthusiasm for thrift stores is really just basic economics (I think). Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent dresses usually run from $150 to $400. Unless they’re from Monk, in which case, they’re $6. Six dollars. SIX DOLLARS.

I rest my case.

Shopping thrift stores like Good will is challenging. Being broke and determined helps. The proof is in the vintage Elie Tahari blazer snagged for less than fifteen bucks.
...keep reading Where There’s a (Good) Will…

Now, I don’t like to brag; anyone who knows me personally can attest to my exemplary modesty in shopping and in life (HA!). Alas yesterday, whilst leaving no hanger unturned at Goodwill, I paused to admire my armfull of Goodies (henceforth, all Goodwill finds will be known as such) and thought:

I am effing awesome at shopping.

Yup; my fancy, overpriced, liberal arts education has brought me to this conclusion. (Sorry Dad).

Shopping at Goodwill is a test of faith. Sooo deep, right?! But for serious. We don’t just love to shop cheap because it’s fiscally responsible. We love it for the thrill of the score. What you see here is an olive-plaid, button-front, velvet-trimmed Tahari blazer – an item that, given its brand, would retail for $400 and change – for $12.99. What you don’t see is the heavy lifting that went into finding this piece (and not just figuratively speaking; I was hauling around fifteen or so garments when I found it). Right before I entered the dressing room, after 45 minutes spent wreaking havoc on the racks, the score caught my eye. I didn’t need another blazer, but COME ON.

I’m not schpieling for accolades (eh fine, maybe a little) – I do have a point. When I hit Goodwill, there was no this-stuff’s-gross, no I-wish-I-was-at-Barneys and no I-hope-I-find-something-decent. Instead, I was thinking, “I WILL SELL THIS HOUSE TODAY” except with buying clothes.

A score like this blazer wouldn’t be any fun if it was the first thing I’d found. I put the time in, I left no stone unturned, and it paid off in the form of a Cheap JAPtastic piece as I knew it would. It will continue to pay off when I get compliments on the it and get to brag about – err, I mean, disclose – the fact that it was $12.99.

When the going gets tough and you’re ready to throw in the towel (i.e. hightail it uptown and open a Saks account), remember: Shopping cheap and looking loaded is like baseball, and I’m your Jimmy Dugan.

It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.
