Velvet, Theory Tops via Goodwill

One of the few downsides of many a New York Goodwills is the thrift’s occasional laziness in tagging its secondhand wares. This sometimes results in register shock – how the EFF can Goodwill charge $30 for beat-up nineties-era Sevens if Buff Ex and Beacons sell the latest styles of designer denim in much better condition for less? It’s a mystery, and it stinks.

Thankfully, surprises of this ilk are few and far between.

What usually happens when I find an untagged thing at Goodwill? Said thing ends up being a whole lot less than I anticipate. Surprises of the celebratory sort are far more common.

Two tops/ Both alike in quality/ At Gramercy’s Goodwill/ Where we lay our scene. (Sorry, Baz Luhrmann’s R&J was just on; am clearly still in a Leo-induced reverie). The brands of said tops?

Velvet and Theory, respectively. I was el nutso about both tops after trying them on; as both were untagged, I did some guesstimating while waiting in line to pay.
Velvet tanks and Theory tops of similar style and material retail for around $80 each. At a buy-sell-trade like Buff Ex, these same brands go for around $15 each (in my experience). It follows that a Velvet tank and a Theory top via Goodwill should be less than $15 each: If Goodwill doesn’t have to sift the fug from the fab on its racks, I don’t have to pay what I’d pay at a BST. (Yes, I am very, VERY cheap. Also self-righteous. Whatevs.)

Long story long, I assumed/hoped I’d be out no more than $30 post-purchase. What did I actually pay for each?

Cue the drumroll.

$5.99. That makes the total cost of my brandtastic finds $11.98.

BOOYAH.

Nothing beats the high of a good Goodwill score. The Goodwill in Davis Square (Somerville, MA, a T ride from Boston proper) has had some major finds. Never mind that it smells of feet and pee, and that it’s been 100 degrees of late, last week I got a Theory plaid cashmere skirt for $3.99. Schweeeeet!! As the old Payless slogan went, “Fashion’s where you find it…” (Or was that another brand? hmm…slogan more memorable than whatever it was promoting.)

    Anyway, congrats of your score!

I live in NJ and the Goodwill stores here will give you a 20% discount on your entire purchase if you show them your college ID. Awesomeness!
